Especial Fasting

Martyr Morteza Motahhari illustrated the terms of true fasting in his speech:

288

Experience one month of Ramadan and experience one real fast, just how prophet Muhammad(pbuh) and his household have told us to do.

What does it mean exactly?

First of all perform the appearances of the fast which is abandoning eating, drinking, sexual relation and some other things. Of course these items we are all aware of acting upon them. But we should perform on the fast that has been quoted as “especial fast” as well. Means during this month it shouldn’t be our mouths fasting only, our tongue should be fasting as well. In Ramadan try not to speak behind anyone’s back with your tongue. Try not to lie even it has a huge benefit for you. Because fasting is not just to avoid eating!

281

prophet Muhammad(pbuh) said:

There are too many people fasting, but they have nothing but hunger and thirst! (which means they are excluded from true benefits of fasting due to their misbehavior)

Speak of nothing but what is necessary either for this life or your other life (afterlife). Our ears should not hear any pointless word or obscenity. Our eyes should not stare at any vulgar scene. Our hands should not reach for betrayal. Our steps should not go forward to oppression and treason. On the contrary consider this month as an opportunity for sympathy and feeding and serving the poor and other people. Just try! Just strive for one month of Ramadan to be a real human and see for yourselves whether those acts of worship have their true effects on you or not? (indeed they’ll have). See if fasting in this month can change you or not?!

  1. It’s great to remember that Fasting is not all being hungry or thirsty, It has a perfect wisdom and philosophy behind this not anyone can understand. Thank you for these useful contents.

      1. Of course we are brothers, no matter what.
But you know, superseded may not be the exact correct word. we believe in Muhammad(pbuh)’s way as the complementary path of Jesus which is monotheism.
As Muhammad(pbuh) reveals his designation reason in this way:
I have been designated to perfect moral standards.

      2. Unfortunately, that is not the loudest-sounding Muslim theology at the moment. Still…we believe that the Messiah/Christ did not come and sacrifice Himself (another bone of disagreement) just to be added onto by another Prophet. But indeed was the One to come. A question–respectfully, of course–I had recently heard that Mohammed was early on trying to work with early Jewish and Christians writings—perhaps giving up on them because the people around him weren’t living up to what their faiths writings said. Any truth to this?

      3. I am not sure if I got the right picture from your question, would you please clarify it a little bit more?
And about the Messiah(AS), first of all yes, we don’t revere him as God nor his son according to the vivid text of Quran on this matter:
O People of the Book! Commit no excesses in your religion: Nor say of Allah aught but the truth. Christ Jesus the son of Mary was (no more than) a messenger of Allah, and His Word, which He bestowed on Mary, and a spirit proceeding from Him: so believe in Allah and His messengers. Say not “Trinity” : desist: it will be better for you: for Allah is one Allah: Glory be to Him: (far exalted is He) above having a son. To Him belong all things in the heavens and on earth. And enough is Allah as a Disposer of affairs. (surrah 4;171)

Secondly, as you said we don’t believe in his crucifixion, again according to exact words of Quran. we believe that he will return with the last Imam(Mahdi) from Muhammad household to spread peace and justice all around the word.
dear John, correct me if I am wrong. Did you say that you believe he is the One because he just sacrificed his life? your words kinda sound that approving God’s message among people and being
his servant doesn’t worth to risk our lives for! So because he was Crucified (as you say) he should be the One otherwise what’s the point!
I highly recommend to get acquainted with Hussain and his martyrdom story to realize the true meaning of sacrifice.
And my last question if you oblige me with the answer, this one is just for my personal information, How much do you believe in distortion of Bible?
        Thanks for your patience

      4. I should add—if it doesn’t get me into trouble (!) that I worked with a Sunni Muslim for 7 years and often had these kind of discussions. And no, he was not the one who suggested about the Prophet’s early theological searchings (I think it was a Christian TV preacher, who did not cite any sources).

      5. Not an expert, however I may have some answers regarding this question but I think it would be better to keep them with me because I’m not one hundred percent sure about their accuracy

      6. In parts. We began wanting to kill each other, but our boss made us work together. One can only explain so much by human reasoning. I profess that things like accuracy of the Bible I have to take that on faith (the “lean not on your own understanding but in all ways acknowledge God …passage).

      7. I can easily imagine what you’ve been through!
Indeed my friend! Faith is all there is needed today!
I’m not gonna bored you with my long speech, but for the last point. We believe that you have to accept only the existence of God and matters like afterlife by faith – mainly the fundamentals of religion (Osule Din) but in details (Forue Din) you need to dig in and improve your knowledge and faith by doing researches from true sources which will definitely be the acknowledgement of your chosen righteous path. In my experience this research could be a great proof for your heart.
Finally, because English wasn’t the language of Jesus for sure, and the Bible that we have today is not the original passage in “Arami” language but its translation. I just was curious about your idea about this matter.
        Thank you again dear john
It was great chatting with you

      8. That is why “rightly dividing God’s word” means being able to gather meaning from the original languages, as well.

As for the “problem” of language, the fact that lives are truly changed even when different languages ARE used—points to the truth that the Bible is as much a book of mind pictures about God, as it is a book. Keeping faith with God’s ideas IS IMPORTANT—keeping it always word-for-word is less so! We should worship God…not so much the Book! (Which, when translated, still changes lives and brings people to faith).

      9. After all, I myself prefer to gain my faith from a book which is completely reliable as the exact words of God and also be able to provide strong reasons to serve my absolute need for logic.
